IHRC BASKETBALL PROGRAM 2009-2010

  • Grades 3-6 Boys & Girls may participate. Team selection takes place via a draft held in the beginning of September. Practices start in early November. Practices are held 2 evenings per week, Monday-Friday. Games are held on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays beginning in the first week of December and running until the last week of February. Postseason tournaments will be the first three weeks of March.
  • Grades 7-8 Boys and Girls often try out for Indian Hill school teams. If they are interested in playing recreation ball should they not make the school team, parents must register them with the IHRC. Only those registered by the second day of sign-ups in September will be guaranteed a spot on a team. Checks and forms for these teams will be held whenever possible until after the school teams have been selected in mid-November. For those making the team, the checks are ripped up with the form. Teams will be formed at this age level if there are enough players and if enough parents are willing to coach. Games and practices are the same as above.
  • Select Boys Teams Grades 4-8 and Girls 4-6 Generally, the select tryouts are the last Sunday of September but that may vary slightly depending on the coach availability, gym availability, and other possible conflicts.  The select teams start with no more than 1 coach and his/her child. The selection process is done by a joint group of the respective coach of the team, representatives from the IH basketball recreation commission, and representatives from the IH high school basketball boys and girls coaching staffs.  This allows the process to be as fair as possible given the time restraints we have to deal with.Their season starts earlier and may run later as many teams are entered in more than one league or postseason tournament. Parents should indicate at sign-ups if their child will want to try out so that proper notification of the time and location of try-outs can be communicated. There is an extra fee charged at sign-ups of $100.00. That fee is returned if the child is not selected for the select team.
  • Grades 1&2 Instructional Basketball is held on Saturday mornings in January and February at the IH Primary School. Children learn skills during these one hour sessions and are not placed on teams. The fee for this program is $30.00.

COACHES

Coaches for grades 3-8 are assigned by the IHRC. Previous IHRC Coaches who follow our Code of Ethics (the Code of Ethics can be found in the “Registration” section) are invited to return as coaches. Assistant coaches are expected to help at the games and practices. Note: The Instructional program uses parents who attend on any particular Saturday to help with learning stations that day.

NON-REC PARTICIPATION AND PRACTICE CONFLICTS

Athletes playing on other basketball teams within our league we, currently the Metro Basketball League, from December-March are not eligible to participate in the IHRC program. If your child is doing another sport or activity, please indicate it on the form and note the days they cannot practice. This will be taken into account when coaches look at the list of players to be drafted. There is no guarantee that a practice schedule or coach request can be accommodated. Please be realistic about the amount of time your child will have to participate in basketball. As a team sport, it is important that all players are available for all practices and games to be fair to coaches and teammates.

TEAM SELECTION

Team selection is made via draft. Coaches may automatically choose their children and the children of their assistant. The draft is held in order as the Basketball Program Chair administrates until all names are drawn. Late sign-ups are only assigned to teams if there is room. Team size is 8-10 players. Coaches usually notify players of team membership by November 1st.

PLAYING TIME

Each team member is required to play one half per game. If a player is not attending practice on a regular basis, it is up to the coach to communicate the reason for the reduced playing time to the parent of the player involved.

PRACTICE SITES

We use a variety of gyms due to our large number of teams. Besides the Primary, Elementary, and Middle Schools, we have used Cincinnati Country Day, St. Paul Methodist Church, and Rockwern Academy (formerly Yavneh Day School) on a limited basis in years past. Parents need to make sure a coach is present before dropping their child off for practice at these various sites. . Damage to school property by unsupervised children has been a problem in the past. We hope that you will assist the coach and help stop any horseplay or vandalism in the areas adjacent to the gyms. Thank you for your cooperation.

FEES

In the 2007-2008 season, the $99.00 fee paid for league entry fees, game officials, time keepers, jerseys, equipment, gym rental fees, and awards. The fee may change as we look at potential changes in league affiliation and the expenses associated with entry into league programs. There is an extra fee of $100.00 charged at sign-ups for those who will try out for select teams. That fee is returned if the child is not selected for the select team.

THOSE ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE

Residency in the Indian Hill School District is required to participate in the program.  Cincinnati Country Day students outside the IH school district may participate if there is room.
